Green bloggers and journalists often point to examples of greenwashing in the marketplace. In theory, this public outing of greenwashers should discourage the practice, while encouraging companies to be more transparent and humble in the marketing of the eco-credentials of their products. In reality, there is evidence that some companies, are "greenhushing" instead. Greenhushing, is when companies purposefully decide not to promote their green activities so as not to be percieved as greenwashing or to avoid negative stigma associated with treehuggery. This creates a situation where there is little good information on which products are better and worse for the environment.
If we want to create a more sustainable, environmentally friendly economy/world, we will need to find a way to quickly communicate what sustainability means and how to act accordingly.
